Modern Potholder & Hot Plate Mats Pattern

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY “STAR” FAST HEAVY CROCHET MERCERIZED COTTON, Article 140 I’m not sure. I’d try two strands of Aunt Lydia’s size 10 crochet cotton worked together.
5 balls Sunshine Yellow.
2 balls each Emerald Green and Red.
1 ball Black or colors of your choice for entire set.
Steel crochet hook No. 1 (2.35mm).

Large mat measures 8½ inches x 11¾ inches.
Small mat measures 6¾ inches x 8¾ inches.
Potholder measures 5½ inches x 5½ inches.

Directions are given for potholder. Small and large mats are given in brackets.

With Green ch 34 (54, 70), sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each remaining st of ch, ch 1 to turn all rows.

2nd Row. 1 sc in each sc (right side of work). Repeat 2nd row 4 (8, 10) times.

7th (11th, 13th) Row. 1 sc in each of the next 6 (10, 12) sc, drop Green, attach Yellow (when changing colors alwayscomplete last half of last st with next color), 1 sc in each remaining sc.

8th (12th, 14th) Row. 1 sc in each of the next 27 (43, 57) sc, drop Yellow, pick up Green, 1 sc in each of the next
6 (10, 12) sc.

Repeat last 2 rows 2 (4,5) times, always picking up attached thread on all repeat rows.

13th (21st, 25th) Row. 1 sc in each of the next 6 (10, 12) sc, drop Green, working over Yellow thread on this row only, attach Red, 1 sc in each of the next 21 (33, 45) sc, drop Red, pick up Yellow, 1 sc in each of the next 6 (10, 12) sc.

14th (22nd, 26th) Row. 1 sc in each of the next 6 (10, 12) sc, drop Yellow, pick up Red, 1 sc in each of the next 21 (33, 45) sc, drop Red, pick up Green, 1 sc in each of the next 6 (10, 12) sc. Repeat last 2 rows 2 (4, 5) times.

19th (31st, 37th) Row. 1 sc in each of the next 6 (10, 12) sc, drop Green, pick up Bed, 1 sc in each of the next 7 (11, 15) sc, drop Red, attach Green, 1 sc in each of next 14 (22, 30) sc, drop Green, pick up Yellow, 1 sc in each of the next 6 (10, 12) sc.

20th (32nd, 38th) Row. 1 sc in each of the next 6 (10, 12) sc, drop Yellow, pick up Green, 1 sc in each of the next 14 (22, 30) sc, drop Green, pick up Red, 1 sc in each of the next 7 (11, 15) sc, drop Red, pick up Green, 1 sc in each of the next 6 (10, 12) sc. Repeat last 2 rows 2 (4, 5) times.

25th (41st, 49th) Row. 1 sc in each of the next 6 (10, 12) sc, drop Green, pick up Red, 1 sc in each of the next 7 (11, 15) sc, drop Red, working over Green thread on this row only, attach Yellow, 1 sc in each of the next 7 (11, 15) sc, drop Yellow, pick up Green, 1 sc in each of the next 7 (11, 15) sc, drop Green, pick up Yellow, 1 sc in each of the next 6 (10, 12) sc.

26th (42nd, 50th) Row. 1 sc in each of the next 6 (10, 12) sc, drop Yellow, pick up Green, 1 sc in each of the next 7 (11, 15) sc, drop Green, pick up Yellow, 1 sc in each of the next 7 (11, 15) sc, drop Yellow, pick up Red, 1 sc in each of the next 7 (11, 15) sc, drop Red, pick up Green, 1 sc in each of the next 6 (10, 12) sc. Repeat last 2 rows 6 (4, 7) times. Fasten all ends securely. Cut all threads.

EDGE: With Black work a row of sc around each mat and potholder working 3 sc in each corner. On potholder only work a sl st in each sc, join, cut thread. With Black cover a bone ring with sc and sew to potholder as illustrated. Back section for hot plate mats. With Yellow ch 54 (70), sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each remaining st of ch, ch 1 to turn all rows.

2nd Row. 1 sc in each sc. Work 48 (62) rows even, cut thread.

With top section toward you using Black, crochet both sec­tions of each mat together with a row of sl sts picking up the back loop of top section and front loop of back section, cut thread.

Tulip Potholder Pattern

MATERIALS:
CLARK’S O.N.T. COTTON RUG YARN, 2 balls of any color will make 3 pot holders. I’d use Peaches and Crème size 4.
Crochet Hook, size G (4mm).
Double fold bias tape.

TULIP . . . Starting at bottom, ch 10. 

1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook, 2 hdc in next ch, hdc in 3 ch, 2 hdc in next ch, 2 dc in last ch. Ch 3, turn. 

2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: Dc in 1st dc, 2 hdc in next dc, hdc in each st across to last dc, 2 hdc in last dc, 2 dc in top st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Ch 2 at end of 4th row (23 sts, counting turning ch as 1 st). 

5th row: Hdc in each st across (23 sts). Ch 2, turn. Repeat 5th row until piece measures 4 ½ inches. Ch 2, turn. 

Next row: Skip first st (a dec), hdc in each st across. Ch 2, turn. Repeat last row 3 more times (19 sts). Ch 1, turn. 

Following row: Sc in next st, hdc in next st, in next st make dc and tr; in next st make tr and dc, hdc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next st, in next st make dc and tr; tr in next st, in next st make tr and dc, hdc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next st, in next st make dc and tr; in next st make tr and dc, hdc in next st, sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. 

Next row: Sc in 7 sts, sl st in 2 sts, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in 2 sts, sc in remaining st. Fasten off. Simulate a center petal by sewing bias tape on top of piece. Make another piece same as this.

FINISHING . . . Sew edges of both pieces together. Then bind all around with bias tape, forming a loop of tape at base of center petal.

Susan Doll Pattern

REQUIREMENTS:
THREAD: 175-yards Bedspreadcotton (such as Aunt Lydia’s size 10)
CROCHET HOOK: 1 steel No. 7 (1.65mm)
RIBBON: 2-yards of narrow ribbon
8-inch Character Doll

   DRESS: Starting at the neck edge, make a chain of 26 sts, turn; 1 dc in 4th st from hook, 2 dc in each remaining chain. (Note – the turning ch-3 will count as a st). Ch 3, turn. 

2nd row: 1 dc in each st across row (46 sts). Ch 3, turn. 

3rd row: 1 dc in next 8 sts, ch 3, skip 5 sts, 1 dc in next 18 sts, ch 3, skip 5 sts, 1 dc in last 9 sts. Ch 3, turn. 

4th row: 1 dc in next 8 sts, 3 dc over ch-3 space, 1 dc in next 18 sts, 3 dc over ch-3 space, 1 dc in last 9 sts (42 sts). Ch 6, turn. 

5th row: skip 1 st, * 1 dc in next st, ch 2, skip 2 sts; repeat from * across row (14 spaces). Ch 6, turn. 

6th row: * 1 dc in next dc, ch 2, repeat * across row, ending with ch 2, 1 dc in 4th st of turning chain. Ch 4, turn. 

Starting of skirt: * Make 5 trc over ch-2 space, 1 trc in next dc, repeat from * across, ending with 1 trc in 4th st of turning chain. Join this and every round. Ch 4. 

2nd rd: 1 trc in each st around. Ch 4. 

3rd rd: 2 trc in each st around. Ch 4. 

4th rd: 1 trc in each st around. Ch 6. 

5th rd: * skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st, ch 2, repeat from * around. Join with a slip st in 4th st of ch-6. Ch 4. 

6th rd: * 2 trc over ch-2 space, 1 trc in next dc; repeat from * around. Join. Fasten off.

   HAT: Chain 6, join to form a ring. Ch 3, make 17 dc into ring. Join this and every round. Ch 3. 

2nd rd: * 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st; repeat from * around. Ch 3. 

3rd-4th-5th rds: * 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 2 sts; repeat from * around. Ch 6. 

Last rd: * skip 1 st, 1 sc in next st, ch 2, repeat from * around. Fasten off.

   PANTIES: Chain 38 sts, turn; 1 dc in 4th st from hook, 1 dc: in each remaining chain st (36 sts). Ch 3, turn. 

2nd to 5th rows included: 1 dc in each st across row. Break thread leaving 12 inches. Sew panties onto doll. Through center of crotch catch the two pieces together.

   FINISHING: Run the narrow ribbon through the row of spaces on hat and dress as in illustration.

Mr Duck Pattern

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREADCOMPANY “DAWN” KNITTING WORSTED, Article W 11.

2-1¼ oz. Skein White.   
1-1¼ oz. Skein Yellow.
¾ Yd. 1 inch Ribbon.
2 Small Buttons for Eyes.
Bone Crochet Hook No. 5 or No. 6.
Kapok or Cotton for filling.

I’d use any size 4 medium worsted weight yarn and a size F (3.75mm) hook

BODY: With White, ch 2, work 8 sc in 1st st of ch (do not join rounds).
2nd Round. 2 sc in each sc.
3rd Round. * 1 dc, 1 sc in next st, 1 dc in next st, 1 sc, 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in next st, repeat from * all around.
4th Round. * 1 sc in each of the first 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * all round.
5th Round. 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in next st, (pattern) repeat from beginning all around.
6th Round. * 1 sc in each of the first 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * all around.
7th Round. Work in pattern even.
8th Round. * 1 sc in each of the first 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * all around.
9th Round. Work in pattern even.
10th Round. * 1 sc in each of the first 5 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * all around.
11th Round. Work in pattern even.
12th Round. * 1 sc in each of the first 6 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * all around.
13th Round. Work in pattern even.

21st Round. Work in pattern even.
22nd Round. Decrease in every 6th and 7th st, then work 1 round of pattern even.
24th Round. Decrease in every 5th and 6th st, then work 1 round of pattern even.
26th Round. Decrease in every 4th and 5th st, then work 1 round of pattern even.
28th Round. Decrease in every 3rd and 4th st, then work 1 round of pattern even.
30th Round. Decrease in every 2nd and 3rd st, then work 1 round of pattern even, break yarn leaving a length about 12 inches for sewing.

HEAD: With White, work the first 9 rounds the same as body.
10th Round. 1 sc in each st, then work 1 round of pat­tern even. Repeat the last 2 rounds once.
14th Round. Start decreasing following the 24th to 31st rounds of body, break yarn leaving a 12 inch length for sewing.

LEGS: With Yellow, ch 2, work 8 sc in first st of ch, (foot).
2nd Round. 2 sc in each sc, then work 1 round of pattern even.
4th Round. * 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * all around.
5th Round. Work in pattern even.
6th Round. 1 sc in each st, then work 1 round of pattern even.
8th Round. Work in sc, decreasing in every 2nd and 3rd st, then work 1 round of pattern even.
10th Round. Work the same as 8th round.
11th to 19th Rounds. Work in sc, working in the back loop of st only, break yarn. Work another leg in the same manner.

WINGS: With Yellow, ch 17, work 16 sc on ch, ch 1, turn. Working the remainder in back loop of st only, 1 sc in each of the next 15 sts, ch 3, turn, 1 sc in first st of ch 3, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sc, * ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, ch 3, turn, 1 sc in the first st of ch 3, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sc, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sc on base, repeat from * 4 times, break yarn. Work 3 more wing sections in same manner.

BILL: With Yellow, ch 7, work 6 sc on ch, ch 1 to turn each row. Work 3 more rows of sc even, then decrease 1 st at the beginning of each row until 2 sts remain. Work 1 row of sc all around, break yarn. Work 1 more section in same manner.

HAT: With Yellow, work same as first 7 rounds of leg, then work 1 round of sc even, join, ch 1, turn.
9th Round. * 1 sc in next st, 1 dc in next st, ch 1, repeat from * all around.
10th Round. * 1 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next dc, 1 sc under the ch 1, repeat from * all around, break yarn.
To assemble Duck: Fill body, head and legs with Cotton or Kapok. Thread the 12 inch length of wool of body into needle and draw top together. Thread the 12 inch length of head into needle and draw together, then sew the head to body. Sew the top of legs, place them in posi­tion and sew to body as illustrated. Place two sections of wings at each side of body and sew in position. Sew the 2 sections of bill in position. Sew 2 small buttons for eyes. Sew hat in position. With White, ch 50, break yarn and tie around hat.
