Clark’s O.N.T. Plastic Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2.75 mm) and 1 pair No. 5 (3.75mm).
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 0 (zero) or a D-3. (3.25mm)

GAUGE: 6 sts  make 1 inch (2.54cm); 7 rows make 1 inch (2.54cm).

   Starting at lower edge with No. 2 (2.75mm) knitting pins, cast on 30 sts loosely. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 3½ inches (8.89cm), increasing 6 sts evenly across last row.

Change to No. 5 knitting pins and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece measures 6 inches (15.24cm) in all, ending with a purl row.

To Shape Top: 1st row: (Sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k 14, k 2 tog) twice. 

2nd and all even rows: P across. 

3rd row: (Sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k 12, k 2 tog) twice.

Work in this manner, decreasing 4 sts every other row until 20 sts remain, ending with a purl row.

Bind off.

Make 3 more Mitts the same way.

To Form Numbers: Print numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 on a piece of paper, having each number 2 inches (5.08cm) high, then with White “Speed-Cro-Sheen” and No. 1/0 (3.25mm) hook, make a chain long enough to form number, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.

Break off. Sew number to Mitt.

Complete all Mitts the same way.

Attach “Speed- Cro-Sheen” to tip of first Mitt, (make a chain 6 inches (15.24cm) long, sl st in tip of next Mitt) 3 times.

Break off.

MATERIALS
BERNAT Super Knitting Worsted (2 oz. skeins) — 1 each Main Color (MC) and 1 Contrasting Color (CC) I think any CYC 4 medium knitted worsted weight (UK Aran, Australia 10ply) should give the gauge/tension below.

 1 pair straight knitting needles No. 10 (6mm) OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE/TENSION GIVEN BELOW

GAUGE: 4 sts = 1 inch (2.54cm) ; 6 rows = 1 inch (2.54cm)

DIRECTIONS:

Using 1 strand each of M C and C C, starting at center back cast on 41 sts.

Row 1: K 5 for turn back cuff, P 1, K 29, P 1, K 5 (cuff).

Row 2: K 15, P 1, K 9 (sole), P 1, K 15. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until there are 13 ridges on right side, ending with Row 2.

At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 6 sts.

SHAPE TOE: Row 1: P 1, * K 1, P 1, repeat from * across row.

Row 2: K 1, * P 1, K 1, repeat from * across row.

Repeat these 2 rows 6 times more.

Break off yarns, leaving a 12 inch (30.48cm) end.

Pull yarn through all sts on needle and draw up tightly.

Sew to start of ribbing to form toe.

Fold cast on edge in half and seam for center back.

Turn back cuff.

BOW: Using M C, cast on 16 sts.

K even in garter st for 14 rows.

Bind off.

Wind 1 strand of yarn tightly around center to form bow and sew to top of toe.

MATERIALS Per Doll.

J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 1 ball of White or any color.

I remember this thread, but wasn’t sure what size it was. So I looked it up.

So we should be able to use any size 10/bedspread cotton thread.

1 yard narrow velvet ribbon.

The original pattern did not include a list of stitches used, so I included them.

I also did my best to change the pattern into UK crochet terms and include both.

16-18-20-inch Doll in US Terms

Steel crochet hooks No. 7 and No. 2.

GAUGE: 2 shells make 12 inches; 4 rows of shells make 12 inches.

Stitches uses in US terms:

Sc/sc……..single crochet

Dc/dc…….double crochet

Hdc………half double crochet

Tr/tr………treble crochet

Starting at neck with No. 7 hook, ch 65 to measure 9 inches.

1st row: 5 tr in 7th ch from hook, * skip 2 ch, in next ch make tr, ch 2 and tr, skip 2 ch, 5 tr in next ch. Repeat from * across, ending with skip 2 ch, tr in last ch. Ch 8, turn.

2nd row: * Holding back last loop of each tr on hook make tr in 5 tr, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster), ch 9, sc in next ch-2 sp, ch 8. Repeat from * across, end-ing with cluster, ch 2, tr in top st of turning ch. Ch 2, turn.

3rd row: 3 hdc in ch-2 sp, make 5 hdc in each loop and 3 hdc in last sp. Change to No. 2 hook, ch 4, turn.

Start of shell rows

4th row: Work only in the back half of dc’s, skip 1st st, (in next st make 3 dc with ch-1 between “shell made” skip 2 sts) 11 times; (shell in next st, skip 1 st) 18 times; (shell in next st, skip 2 sts) 11 times; shell in next st, skip 1 st, dc in next st (41 shells), ch 4, turn.

5th row: Shell in center ch-1 of each shell across. Ch 4, turn. Repeat 5th row until there are 6 rows of shells completed in all. Should end with row 9.

Next row( This should be row 10): Work across 7 shells, skip next 7 shells (sleeve), work across next 13 shells, skip next 7 shells (other sleeve), work across remaining 7 shells. Work straight over these 27 shells until piece measures 6 inches from bottom of yoke or length desired. Fasten off.

LEFT SLEEVE … Attach thread at left underarm and with No. 2 hook work 2 rows of shells same as skirt. Change to No. 7 hook and work sc around, holding in to fit. Work 2 more rows of sc. Fasten off. Sew sleeve seam.

RIGHT SLEEVE … Attach thread and work to correspond with Left Sleeve.

FINISHING…..

Sew back edges of skirt together for 4 inches starting at bottom.

Work a row of sc along back opening.

Then work beading along opposite side of foundation ch as follows: Ch 2, hdc in next ch, * ch 2, 2 hdc in base of 5-tr group, ch 2, 2 hdc in base of 2-tr group. Repeat from * across.

Fasten off. Run ribbon through beading at neck.

Steel crochet hooks; 1.65 mm and 2.20 or 2.25 mm.

TENSION: 2 shells make 30.48 cm; 4 rows of shells make 30.48 cm.

Starting at neck with 1.65 mm hook, ch 65 to measure 22.86 cm.

 Materials Required:

AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY “DAWN” NYLON or “DAWN” DE LUXE FINGERING YARN(From what I can find, this was a size CYC (UK 2ply, Australia 3ply) 1 super fine fingering yarn. I can still find this size yarn in the following brands: Woolike from Michaels, Bernat baby yarn from Joann’s (Be sure it is the size 1. They also make a much larger Baby yarn), and Lion’s Brand Summer Nights at Walmart. Also any sock yarn would work, but it is usually pretty expensive. I can not find anything to replace the Nylon Yarn. 3 ounces Sand

1 Set Double Pointed Knitting Needles No. 1 (2.25mm) OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL RESULT IN STITCH GAUGE/TENSION BELOW.

            GAUGE/TENSION: 8 sts = 1 inch (2.54cm).

            NOTE: For reinforcing toes (and heels) combine 1 strand of “Dawn” Nylon Reinforcing Yarn, Article N-7 with yarn and knit per instructions. I can not find a substitute for this yarn.

            Cast on 72 sts, divide sts on 3 needles (24 sts on each needle), join.

Place a marker at beginning of round.

Work in ribbing of K 2, P 2 for 2½ inches (6.35cm).

Change to stockinette st (K each round), work even until sock measures 8 inches (20.32cm) from beg.

HEEL: At beg of round divide sts as follows: K and sl next 18 sts on a needle, K and sl next 18 sts on another needle.

Working on remaining sts only K 1 row, P 1 row for 2½ inches (5.08cm) ending with a P row.

START TO TURN HEEL:

1st ROW: K 20, sl 1, K 1, pass sl st over K st (p.s.s.o.), K 1, turn.

2nd ROW: Sl 1, P 5, P 2 tog, P 1, turn.

3rd ROW: Sl 1, K 6, sl 1, K 1, p.s.s.o., K 1, turn.

 4th ROW: Sl 1, P 7, P 2 tog, P 1, turn.

Continue in the above manner until all sts have been worked ending with a P row.

Divide these sts on 2 needles. K 10 sts on needle, pick up and K 17 sts on right side of heel (1st needle), work across 36 sts of instep (2nd needle), pick up and K 17 sts on left side of heel, K remaining sts of heel to this needle (3rd needle).

NEXT ROUND: Work even, then dec every other round as follows:

1st needle: K to within 3 sts of end of needle, K 2 tog, K 1;

2nd needle: K across,

3rd needle: K 1, sl 1, K 1, p.s.s.o., K to end of round.

Dec in same manner until there are 72 sts on needles.

Work even until foot measures 7½ inches (19.05cm) or 2 inches (5.08cm) less than desired length from center back of heel.

Decrease for Toe:

1st needle: K to within 3 sts of end of needle, K 2 tog, K 1;

2nd needle: K 1, sl 1, K 1, p.s.s.o., work to within 3 sts of end of same needle, K 2 tog, K 1;

3rd needle: K 1, sl 1, K 1, p.s.s.o., work to end of round. K 1 round even.

Repeat these 2 rounds until 16 sts remain (8 sts on instep needle and 4 sts on each back needle).

Sl sts of back needles to one needle.

Weave sts together.

            BACK: On No. 8 (5mm) needles cast on 92 (96, 100) sts. Work in K 2, P 2 ribbing for 1½ inches (3/81cm) inc 1 st on last row of ribbing (all sizes). Change to No. 10 (6mm) needles.

GAUGE/TENSION: 9 sts = 2 inches (5.08cm);  6 rows = 1 inch (2.54cm)

            Directions are given for small size. Changes for medium and large sizes given in parentheses.

            BACK: Cast on 76 (80, 84) sts.

1st and 2nd ROWS: K 2, P 2 across each row.

Dividing sts evenly, sl all sts from stitch holders to 3 double pointed needles and work in pattern for 2 inches (5.08cm); then K each row for 2 inches (5.09cm) for neck facing.

Bind off loosely. Turn neck facing to inside and sew in place.

I think this was the first pattern my 4H teacher taught us in the 1950’s. She thought it would be easier for us to learn with two needles before we moved on to 3, 4, or 5.

 Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY “DAWN” KNITTING WORSTED (Any size 4 medium wt knitted worsted should work.)

2 Ounces Ladies Small, 3 Ounces (all remaining sizes) Canary.

1 Pr. Knitting Needles No. 5 (3.75mm) and No. 7(4.50mm) OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL RESULT IN STITCH GAUGE/TENSION BELOW:    

GAUGE/TENSION for No. 7(4.5mm) Needles: 5 sts = 1 inch (2.54cm); 7 rows = 1 inch (2.54cm).

            Directions are given for ladies small size. Changes for medium and large sizes are given in parentheses. Men’s sizes given in bold face type.

            LEFT MITTEN: With No. 5 (3.75mm) needles cast on 28 (32, 36) 32 (36, 40) sts and work in ribbing of K 2, P 2 for 1¾ inches (4.45cm), 2 inches (5.08cm) increasing 2 sts for men’s small size only in last row of ribbing. Change to No. 7 (4.5mm) needles and work in stockinette st (K 1 row, P 1 row) for 6 (6, 8) 8 (8, 10) rows.

NEXT ROW: Start Gussett. K 13 (15, 17) 16 (17, 19) sts, inc 1 st in each of the next 2 sts, K next 13 (15,17) 16 (17, 19) sts.

NEXT ROW: P across row.

NEXT ROW: K 13 (15, 17) 16 (17, 19) sts, inc in next st, K 2, inc in next st, K to end of row. Continue in stockinette st increasing at Gusset every other row until there are 40 (44, 50) 46 (50, 54) sts on needle ending with a K row.

NEXT ROW: P 14 (16, 18) 16 (18, 19) sts and place on st holder, work next 12 (12, 14) 14 (14, 16) sts for thumb, place remaining sts on 2nd st holder.

            THUMB: Work in stockinette st until thumb measures ¼ inch (.64cm) less than desired length ending with a P row.

 3 (3, 4) 4 ounce skeins Canary (Main Color MC) 1—4 ounce skein Tangerine (Contrasting Color CC) 1 Pr. Knitting Needles No. 9 (5.5mm) OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL RESULT IN STITCH GAUGE/TENSION BELOW.

            GAUGE/TENSION: 9 sts = 2 inches (5.08cm)

            Directions are given for small size. Changes for medium and large sizes are given in parentheses.

            BACK: With Canary (Main Color) cast on 73 (77, 81) sts.

1st ROW: P across row.

2nd ROW: K across row, drop MC.

3rd and 4th ROWS: With Tangerine (Contrasting Color) K across each row, drop CC.

5th ROW: With MC, K 1, * yarn to back sl 1 as if to P, K 1, repeat from * across row.

6th ROW: K 1, * yarn to front, sl 1 as if to P, K 1 repeat from * across row, drop MC

7th and 8th ROWS: With CC K across each row, drop CC.

9th ROW: With MC K across row.

10th ROW: P across row, drop MC.

11th and 12th ROWS: With CC K across each row, drop CC.

13th ROW: With MC K across row.

14th ROW: P across row, drop MC.

15th and 16th ROWS: With CC K across each row, drop CC.

17th ROW: With MC repeat 5th row.

With MC repeat from 19th to 22nd rows for pattern.

Work even in pattern until back measures 13½ (34.29) inches from beg or desired length to underarm.

SHAPE ARMHOLES: Bind off 3 (4, 5) sts at beg of next 2 rows; then dec 1 st at each end every other row 4 times.

Work even on 59 (61, 63) sts until armholes measure 7 (7¼, 7½) inches 17.78 (18.39, 19.05) cm from 1st bind off. Work across 12 (13, 14) sts, bind off next 35 sts for back of neck, work across remaining sts.

NEXT ROW: Tie in another skein of yarn and working both sides at same time dec 1 st at each side of neck edge.

NEXT ROW: Work even.

NEXT ROW: Dec 1 st at each side of neck edge.

NEXT 2 ROWS. SHAPE SHOULDERS: Bind off 5 (5, 6) sts at beg of each row, bind off 5 (6, 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

            FRONT: Work same as back to underarm, Shape Armholes same as back. Work even until armholes measure 4½ (4¾, 5) inches; 11.43 (12.07, 12.70) cm.

            SHAPE NECK: Work across 17 (18, 19) sts, bind off next 25 sts, work across remaining sts.

NEXT ROW: Tie in another skein of yarn and working both sides at same time dec 1 st at each side of neck edge, then dec 1 st at each side of neck edge every other row 6 more times. Work even until armholes measure same as back.

Shape Shoulders same as back.

FINISHING US TERMS: Block each section. Sew shoulder and side seams matching patterns.

NECK EDGE: Attach MC at left shoulder and work a row of sc all around neck edge working 1 sc in every other row on sides, 1 sc in each bound off st across front and back, join, cut MC.

Attach CC and work 1 sc in each st, join, cut yarn.

ARMHOLE EDGE: Attach MC at underarm and work 1 sc in each bound off st at underarm and 1 sc in every other row around armhole, join, cut yarn.

NEXT ROW: Attach CC and work 1 sc in each sc, join, cut yarn.

FINISHING UK TERMS: Block each section. Sew shoulder and side seams matching patterns.

NECK EDGE: Attach MC at left shoulder and work a row of dc all around neck edge working 1 dc in every other row on sides, 1 dc in each bound off st across front and back, join, cut MC.

Attach CC and work 1 dc in each st, join, cut yarn.

ARMHOLE EDGE: Attach MC at underarm and work 1 dc in each bound off st at underarm and 1 dc in every other row around armhole, join, cut yarn.

1st and 2nd ROWS: K across each row.

3rd ROW * With Tangerine K 1, with Olivette K 1, repeat from * across row (keeping color not being used to the front of work).’

4th ROW * With Olivette K 1, with Tangerine K 1 (keeping color not being used to back of work), repeat from * across row, cut Tangerine.

5th and 6th ROWS: With Olivette K across each row, cut Olivette.

7th ROW: With Lt. Yellow K across row, drop Lt. Yellow.

8th ROW: With Potter Gold K 1, P 1 across row.

9th ROW: P 1, K 1 across row, cut Potter Gold.

NEXT 4 ROWS: Repeat the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th rows once. Then work in

Half of chart is given. Work from right to left to center of chart, then work from left to right to complete pattern. Repeat from beginning twice (all sizes). Place markers for underarms.

Continue in pattern for 8 (8 1/2, 9) more inches 20.32(21.59,22.86) more cm.

SHAPE SHOULDERS: Bind off 7 (8, 8) sts at beg of row for shoulder, work to end of row.

Bind off 7 (8, 8) sts at beg of next row for opposite shoulder, work across and place 20 (22, 24) sts on st holder, bind off 24 (24,26) sts for neck opening, work to end of row. Working on one side only, bind off 7 (8, 8) sts at beg of next row. Bind off 6 (6,8) sts at beg of next row for neck shaping. Bind off remaining sts. 51 sts from st holder and work across row, then finish other shoulder to correspond.

FRONT: Work same as back. Sew shoulder seams matching stripes.

SLEEVES: With same color as used at underarm markers pick up 72 (78, 84) sts around armhole and work in pattern same as back and front. Follow chart centering design, dec. 1 st each side every 3/4″ (1.91cm) until 40 (42, 44) sts remain. Continue even until there are 3 patterns. Finish with 1st 16 rows, bind off.

FINISHING: Sew sleeve and side seams. Work sl sts around neck edge with color of last row.

1 Pr. Knitting Needles No. 8 (5mm) OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL RESULT IN STITCH GAUGE BELOW.

GAUGE/TENSION: 9 sts = 2 inches (5.08cm)

            With Olive Green cast on 63 sts.

1st ROW: K.

2nd ROW: P.

3rd ROW: K, drop Olive Green.

4th ROW: With White K.

5th ROW: P.

6th ROW: K.

7th ROW: P, drop White.

8th ROW: With Watermelon K.

9th ROW: K.

10th ROW: P.

11th ROW: K, drop Watermelon.

12th ROW: With White K.

13th ROW: P.

14th ROW: K.

15th ROW: P, drop White.

16th ROW: With Canary K.

Working across short end, work 1 sc in each st, cut yarn. Complete other section in same manner. Block to measure 14 × 28 inches.

            FINISHING UK TERMS: Working down 1 long side attach White in 1st st of Olive Green stripe; with crochet hook work 4 dc in each White stripe down side skipping all colored stripes to corner working the dc over all ends of carried colors. Working across short end, work 1 dc in each st, cut yarn. Complete other section in same manner. Block to measure 14 × 28 inches

            Sew one short unfinished end to one long unfinished side sewing to within the center of 14th White stripe. Finish other side in same manner. This leaves 14 stripes on each section free for neck opening. Attach White at neck opening and

US TERMS work 4 sc over each White stripe, join.

UK TERMSwork 4 dc over each White stripe, join.

NEXT ROW: Work a sl st in each st, join cut yarn. With White work an 18 inch (45.72cm) ch. Attach to center of neck. Finish ends with 3 pompons as illustrated.

            POMPONS: Wind yarn 14 times over 2 legs of a chair or any open flat surface (28 strands). Tie with a 6 inch (15.24cm) strand at 1¼ inch (3.18cm) intervals, cut between ties.

Attach a pompon of matching color to each stripe alternating colors across each Olive Green stripe.
